Beginnings of a Slide Guitar tutorial

28/07/06

Matthew Geddes

Added the beginnings of a tutorial in playing Slide Guitar. It doesn't consist of just a set of licks, riffs or whatever to play, but instead talks about more about different parts of the techniques I commonly use. I don't consider it complete, so please feel free to send questions, comments and suggestions and I'll try and update it (or at very least, answer your questions).

LinuxSA - talk on recording on Linux

20/06/06

Matthew Geddes

I'm doing a talk for LinuxSA tonight on some recording stuff I've done using Linux and Open Source software. Here's a paper and some slides.

Update: we recorded a 40-second snippet from Rossini's Barber Of Seville with a distinct Metal flavour. Starring Hydrogen on drums and Matt Geddes on Rhythm guitar and Matt Geddes on Lead guitar.

Home recording tips

Matthew Geddes

Considering doing some kind of audio recording in your own home? Shame on you and your sick perversion. Also, welcome to the club -- we have a secret handshake.

It's not impossible to create a recording at home that is expressive and interesting. Sure, depending on your equipment, you may lose some sound quality, but it's not all out of your control. I've written down a few miscellaneous tips that may help get that little bit more from your home recordings. Comments welcome.

Simple harmony writing

13/01/2006

Matthew Geddes

Ever written a really cool riff or melody, but always wanted to add something else to it to complement it? Perhaps you just have a fetish for music theory. Maybe you have a morbid fascination with scales, modes and intervals.

No matter what the reason, this paper gives a quick, practical overview for those wanting to create simple harmonies between two musical parts. Send any suggestions, comments or other feedback to mgeddes at musicalcarrion.com.
